DCI 4.0: first confirmed speakers

The DCI team searched all over the world and we found a number of speakers who are guaranteed to blow your mind! Our keynote speaker this year is Cameroon blogger Dibussi Tande who will inform us about the state of social justice and digital media in Africa, other confirmed speakers are Elia Varela Serra from Maneno, Global Voices editor Eduardo Ávila, Brett Davidson with Ndesanjo Macha (Stop Stock-outs project), Peter Benjamin on Mobile for Mobilisation and mobile for communities entrepreneur Marlon Parker.

The line-up of this years’ DCI speakers is clearly linked to the objectives set out in our Concept Document and relates to our 4.0 theme “Digital Civil Society and Journalism in Africa“.  Together with Global Voices editor Eduardo Ávila Maneno will enlighten us on the ever pertinent topic of Digital Media and the Right to Language. Maneno argues that cross-communication is an issue that is often forgotten about. “Maneno is a system where multiple language versions for articles can sit atop one another for immediate access.” Global Voices is known as a point of entry to multilingual blogs.

Besides the issues around language the DCI also looks closer into Gender, Civil Society and Digital Media with the Women of Uganda Network and Behind the Mask. Stop Stock-outs brain Brett Davidson and Ndesanjo Macha (the keynote DCI speaker in 2007 and still on the forefront of digital activism) are going to explain how civil society can use mapping tools to ensure mass media take up.

Peter Benjamin’s Mobile for Mobilisation presentation is right on trend with the topic Cellphone Technology for Social Change. CPUT lecturer Marlon Parker sure knows how to mobilise and assist citizens using cell phones. Parker was a speaker at last year’s DCI and was asked to return after he showed us how he is helping ex-drug users to stay clean using their cell phones! This time he won’t be presenting but giving us an insight into the tools he uses in a DCI workshop in the afternoon on Sunday 6 September.
